WAYS TO PROMOTE AND ENCOURAGE A NURTURING AND HEALTHY ATTACHMENT WITH YOUR CHILD
For Infants and Toddlers:
Skin to skin contact
Respond to them when they cry-babies cannot be spoiled by being comforted
Smile and talk to your baby
Breastfeeding
Baby massages, help child unwind before bedtime, and provides opportunity for playful interactions
Baby carriers-provides closeness, comfort and security
For Older Children:
Frequent hugs and/or snuggling
Playfulness and games
Reading and singing together
PARENTING TECHNIQUES
Help your children feel loved and secure
Make sure your children know you love them even when they do something wrong
Encourage them, praise their achievements, recognize skills they are developing
Spend time with your children, do things that you both enjoy, listen to your child
Learn how to use non-physical options for discipline. Based on your child’s age, this may simply be re-directing your child’s attention offering choices or using time out.
Realize that community resources add value;
Take children to libraries, museums, movies and sporting events
Enroll your child in youth programs
Use community services such as parenting classes
Communicate with childcare or school staff
Participate in religious or youth groups
Seek help, if you need it
Talk to someone
Seek respite when you need a break
Call a helpline
Seek counseling
Take a Parenting Class
Accept help, you do not have to do it all!!
